EXCERPT #1:

Sipping my beer, I look around at the familiar scene.  If the honky tonk music blaring from the speakers in the ceiling hadn’t been enough to scream COUNTRY BAR, the sea of cowboy hats would have been.  I smile as I adjust the black one that sits atop my own head.  I love being incognito.  Even if, by chance, someone I know stumbles into the smoke-filled dive, they’d never believe it was me looking out from beneath the brim.
Something hits the back of my barstool—hard—just as I put the glass to my lips.  Ice cold beer pours down my chin and straight into my cleavage.  I suck in a breath.
“’Scuse me,” a deep voice rumbles in my ear.  Two hands grip my upper arms and pull me back, keeping me from tipping right out of my seat.  I’m looking down at my soggy jeans and t-shirt when I feel the hands disappear.  Half a second later, a face appears in my line of sight.  “I’m so sorry.  Are you okay?”
My fingers stop plucking wet cotton away from my chest and I stare.  Quite rudely, I might add.  I’m speechless. Literally.  And that, like, never happens to me.
The most amazing eyes I’ve ever seen are staring back at me.  They are pale greenish-gray, rimmed in sooty lashes and filled with concern.
A sharp jab to my shin makes me let out the breath I hadn’t been aware of holding.  I see my best friend Jenna’s head poke out from behind the mystery face.  I know she kicked me and I know she’s trying to get my attention, but I can’t look away from these eyes long enough to glare at her.
God, his eyes!  I’ve never seen eyes that make me want to gasp and giggle and do a strip tease all at once.  But these do.
They flicker down, letting me go just long enough to collect my wits.  I find very few of them.  They are well and truly scattered.  When he looks back up at me, his eyes are wrinkled at the corners.  He’s smiling.  And holy hell, what a smile it is!
“Does it make me a bad person for liking your shirt better this way?”
I glance down at myself.  My dark pink bra is plainly visible through the now-wet paper thin material of my pale pink shirt.  So are my very erect nipples.  I blush, mortified.
Why, oh why did I wear a light pink t-shirt with a dark pink bra?
Because you can’t see your bra through it when it’s dry, dumb ass.
A thumb brushes my right cheek.  “God, that’s sexy,” he whispers.  Against my will, my eyes fly to his face.  His smile has died to a lopsided grin that is devastation in its purest form.  “I’ve never made a girl blush before.”
I laugh nervously, struggling to find my voice, to find my dignity.  “Somehow I doubt that,” I say softly.
“Wow! The hair of a devil, the face of an angel and the voice of a phone sex operator.  You really are the perfect woman.”
To my utter humiliation, my cheeks burn even hotter.  Curse my fair skin!
Reaching into his pocket, Hot Stranger pulls out a couple bills and slides them across the bar.  “Another of whatever…” He trails off, looking at me in question, waiting for me to fill in the blank.
“Cami,” I say, trying to hold back my grin.
Smooth way of getting my name.  Chalk one up for Hot Stranger.
“Another of whatever Camiis having.”  He turns back to me, a wicked gleam in his smoky eyes.  “Sorry about your drink.  Not so much about your shirt, though,” he admits candidly.
Willing myself not to blush again, I tilt my head.  “So, do clumsy strangers have names in this place?  Or are you just called ‘bull in china shop’?”
The lopsided grin comes back.  “Patrick, but my friends call me Trick.”
“Trick?  As in trick or treat?  That kind of trick?”
He laughs and my stomach flutters.  It actually flutters.  “Yep.  That kind of trick.”  He sobers and leans in close to me.  “Cami, can I ask a favor?”
I’m breathless again.  He’s so close I can count every hair in the stubble that dusts his tan cheeks.  For just a second, his clean manly scent overrides the cigarette smoke and stale beer smell of the bar.
I lose my voice—again—so I nod.
“Pick ‘treat.’  Please, for the love of God, pick ‘treat’.”
Like an idiot, I say nothing. I do nothing.  I simply stare.  Like a…a…well, like an idiot.
He makes a disappointed noise with his lips then starts shaking his head.  “Too bad.  Woulda made my night.”
He straightens, takes a step back and smiles at me again.  “Nice to meet you, Cami,” he says, and then he turns and melts into the crowd.

EXCERPT #2:

From the corner of my eye, I see Cami fidget.  At first, it appears to be a nervous thing.  But when I glance at her, she looks at me and smiles. It’s a bright smile.  Bright and …excited, which makes me think it’s not all bad nerves.  In fact, it makes me twitch a little in my jeans, which is never a good thing when I’m getting ready to strip down in front of mixed company.
Without even pausing, Jenna pulls her shirt over her head then reaches for Rusty’s.  While they’re all wrapped up in removing each other’s clothes, I turn more toward Cami.
“Are you sure you’re up for this?”
She takes a deep breath and grins at me.  “Yep.  You?”
I nod.  “Yep.”
She puts one small hand on my arm and looks me in the eye.  “It’ll be fine, you know.  Drogheda would never tell on me, so you don’t need to worry, okay?”
She’s worrying about me worrying?  Now I feel bad for telling her how important this job is.
“I’m not worried,” I assure her.  “I trust you.”
Her smile is sweet and pleased and it makes me want to kiss her.  Hell, everything she does makes me want to kiss her.
“Good.  You should.”
As if she’s making her point, Cami takes a few steps back and pulls her shirt over her head.  She does it quickly and then holds it in front of her and waits.  That’s my cue to shed a piece of clothing, too.
In the brightness of the full moon, I can see her eyes twinkling devilishly.  She’s so coy.  So damned adorably coy.
God, it would be so much fun to have her all to myself for one night.  Just one night.  Maybe that would be enough to get her out of my system.
“All right then, Mr. Rock Hard Abs, show me what you got,” she demands teasingly.
She doesn’t have to ask me twice!  Grabbing a handful of shirt behind my neck, I pull it over my head.  But I throw mine on one of the white lounge chairs, sort of like upping the ante a little.  Her eyes flicker down my chest and stomach.  My muscles tighten.  I see her gaze drop lower then hurry back to my face. She’s curious.  She wants to look, she wants to see what’s under my jeans, but she’s trying not to show it.  I bite back a groan.
What I wouldn’t give to carry her off to someplace more private…

EXCERPT #3:

“Do you like it?  I mean working with the horses here?”
“I love working with horses. It’s what I was going to specialize in after school.  As for working here,” I pause, just to see what she does.  After a few seconds, she glances at me from beneath her lashes.
She just can’t help but be sexy.
“I’m discovering it has its definite…benefits.”
She grins.  “Is that right?”
“Yes, ma’am,” I say in my best Southern drawl.
“And what would those be?”
Good God, she’s teasing me!
“The view around here is very nice for one thing.  Rounded hills, lush valleys, gently-curving roads, tight, firm…turns.”  I look over at her from the corner of my eye and grin.  “And sometimes there’s a hint of strawberry in the air.  Makes my mouth water.”
“Wow, it, uh, it sounds pretty spectacular when you put it like that.  But I’m sure it’s just a plain ole place, much like any other.”
“See now that’s where you’re wrong.  This place is special. I knew it from the start.  This is the kind of…place that gets under your skin and won’t let you have a moment’s peace until you give into it.”
“But you don’t want to give into it.”
“I didn’t say that.  I said I couldn’t give into it. There’s a big difference.”

The Wild Ones

Passion as hot as midnight in the South and love as wild as the horses they tame.

Camille “Cami” Hines is the darling daughter of the South’s champion thoroughbred breeder, Jack Hines.  She has a pedigree that rivals some of her father’s best horses.  Other than feeling a little suffocated at times, Cami thought she was pretty happy with her boyfriend, her life and her future.

But that was before she met Patrick Henley.

“Trick” blurs the lines between what Cami wants and what is expected of her.  He’s considered the “help,” which is forbidden fruit as far as her father is concerned, not to mention that Trick would be fired if he ever laid a hand on her.  And Trick needs his job.  Desperately.  His family depends on him.

The heart wants what the heart wants, though, and Trick and Cami are drawn to each other despite the obstacles.  At least the ones they know of.

When Trick stumbles upon a note from his father, it triggers a series of revelations that could ruin what he and Cami have worked so hard to overcome.  It turns out there’s more to Trick’s presence at the ranch than either of them knew, secrets that could tear them apart.

In Which I Interview Samantha Combs

Hey everyone and welcome to Mera’s YA Book List!

Today we have Samantha Combs, author of several amazing books here with us!

Thanks for joining us again Samantha!
Fun fact:  Samantha was actually our first author interviewee as well!

Mera: The last time you were here, you said your favorite book was The Help. I know it probably changes a lot. What’s your current favorite?

Samantha: I still love The Help!  The writing style was like I was listening to a story on my grandmother’s lap.  While it does change, it hasn’t so far!

Mera: For those Listers who don’t know much about your novels, can you tell us a bit about them all?

Samantha: My YA novels are all paranormals.  Spellboundis about a teen witch and her journey to love and happiness while an evil demon is hunting her.  Everspell, the sequel, takes you further into the lives of the Starrs and the Daniels as they, and their friends, strengthen their family and their powers.  Ghostly is about a young teen girl who discovers her insecurities make her attractive, even to a hunky ghost!  The Detention Demon is my middle grade horror about, what else?  A detention teacher who may or may not eat his students.  I also have two adult horror collections.  Paranormal writing is just a door opening to horror, I have found, but I honestly love writing in both genres.

Mera: Since the publication of Spellbound, you have been on a role when it comes to writing. Has anything significant changed about your writing process?

Samantha: I’m prouder of what I am creating, and feel as though I have tightened my writing style.  I think that now, a book can be recognized as mine just by the style.  Writing the short stories has really helped me focus on my current project, making it less wordy, tighter, and teaching me how to spin a believable yarn in a short time period.  A great agent told me that if you can write a short story, you can write anything.

Mera: You have a new book, entitled Waterdancer coming out soon. Can you tell us about the characters?

Samantha: Probably more than any other book, the main character draws heavily from my own teen years.  Very autobiographical, Bailey Wasserman is a teen girl on the cusp of womanhood, dealing with first love, buried feelings of abandonment, a new stepfather and a new school, all in the same summer.  Ask my Mum.  That was so me.

Mera: If you had to pick one, which of your many diverse characters do you relate to the most?

Samantha:
Definitely Bailey, from Waterdancer.  And I have a character in my newest finished project who is cocky and cool and just a tiny bit unsure of herself, worried what others see in her and pretending not to care.  Also me, from my teen years.  The new character’s name is Calliope Flood.  Callie for short.

Mera: You’ve written books about witches, ghosts, and now sea creatures. You’ve even written  horror anthologies. Can I ask what is your favorite mythological or paranormal creature?

Samantha:  I love the unrestrained parameters of a witch.  She can be as powerful as you want to make her, with whatever talents you wish to bestow.

Mera:  It’s apparent your muse loves you. What are you two working on currently? And by that I mean, can you tell us about your upcoming projects?

Samantha:  I hinted about it.  I have just completed a book I am very excited about.  I’m working on the logline, so cut me some slack if this sucks.  The Deadlies is about  a group of moneyed, privileged girls from a Southern, antebellum prep academy possessed by the demons of the seven deadly sins, and the plucky lass who is destined to free them from their evil.  Or something like that.

Mera: If you could spend a day with ANYONE, alive or dead, who would you choose? I promise this isn’t a ruse for you to choose me? I mean besides me, lol! ;)

Samantha: It’s a toss-up.  I’d love to spend the day with Stephen King, napping, writing, and counting my money.  But, seriously, since I was a child, I have had an enormous respect for forward-thinking, intelligent women.  Gamechangers.  I would love to hang out with Amelia Earhart or my Grandmother.  Luckily, I have my Mum.  I love spending the day with her.

Mera: Besides writing, what is your absolutely favorite thing to do?

Samantha:
I love to cook.  Creating beautiful meals or cakes and desserts really makes me happy.  And I am a crafty person too.

Mera: We’ve reached our last question, unfortunately. Here is where I must ask: Is there anything else you’d like my Listers to know?

Samantha: I’d like them to know I write for them.  I write for the person who wants to snuggle under a blanket with a good book and I want to provide that good book.

Again, thanks so much to the wonderful Samantha Combs for visiting us today! I absolutely adore her!

Check out her books! And if it pleases you check out our past interview and my reviews (linked below).

Happy Reading!

FIRST Interview with Samantha

As if high school isn’t hard enough, try being Bailey Wasserman.  Try being the new girl in town, navigating a touchy relationship with your flighty mom’s rich new husband in a brand new town he’s just moved you to.  Add to that finding out that your father, a semi-pro surfer who’s just mysteriously re-entered your life after nearly fifteen years of silence, is half sea-creature and you’re about to inherit that particular gene on your sixteenth birthday which is only a few days away, all after you just met the cutest surfer boy you’ve ever seen in your life.

Bailey feels she and her mom have always met life’s challenges as a team of two, more like best friends than mother and daughter.  But her mom’s recent marriage has changed all that. Having her little brother Landry is all Bailey can find good about that union.  The move to wealthy Del Mar from their humble beginnings has turned Bailey sour, until a chance meeting of surf hottie Jack West changes all that.  Then, when her father reenters her life, with his annoying Zen-surfer lingo and a talking turtle he claims is her spirit guardian, no less, he threatens the only relationship Bailey thinks is working in her world. She soon finds out that’s not all his arrival will do.  His presence and their shared family trait could ultimately force Bailey to make a decision that will alter the course of her own life and those she loves…..forever.

Euterpe YA Event: Sharon Ledwith & her character Amanda Sault

Hey everyone! Today we have Sharon Ledwith and her character Amanda Sault from The Last Timekeepers series here with us! Sharon is here to interview Amanda for us! Thanks for joining us Sharon!

Good day, everyone! I’d like to introduce Amanda Sault. She’s one of my characters from The Last Timekeepers series. Amanda is the Scribe of the group. Say hi, Amanda …

Wait, wait, I’m not ready! I’m trying to get this poem down …oh crap, never mind! Uh, hi everyone.

Hmm. Did I catch you at a bad time?

Sort of. Look, can we just get this interview over with? I still have to study for a math test, and you know how much I suck at math.

I totally get it. Okay, tell the readers what subject you do like.

That’s easy—gym—especially if we get to go outside. Unfortunately, living in White Pines where winter feels longer than summer, doesn’t always allow for that. I also love, no wait, breathe poetry. It’s the one thing I shine at. I’ve even been published in the town paper, the White Pines Weekly. I guess that’s why I was picked over the others to be the Timekeeper Scribe.

Slow down, Amanda. You need to explain to everyone what a Timekeeper is first.

Sorry. My bad. Okay, make yourselves comfortable, and I’ll try my best to explain. What I’m about to share with you is a secret, so you can’t tell anyone. Not that anyone would believe time travel is possible, ‘cause I sure didn’t. That is, I didn’t until it happened to me. Yeah, you heard right, I’m a time traveler—er, correction, I mean I’m a Timekeeper. That’s a little different.

Really? How?

I don’t get to go into the past whenever and wherever I want. I’m summoned, along with four of my classmates, the local white witch, and a history professor by a time portal we dug up called the Arch of Atlantis. BTW—I’m sure you’ll get a chance to meet the other Timekeepers all in good time. Pun intended.

Don’t get cute. Continue please…

Okay, here’s the skinny version, a Timekeeper’s job—our prime directive—is to protect the past, keep it from changing, no matter what. Even if you don’t like how it ends up in the history books. And that’s the hardest part. Not interfering. Just keeping history as real as it was written. And sometimes that sucks.

So, tell us what being a ‘Last’ Timekeeper means.

It’s not as ominous as it sounds. We’re supposed to be Earth’s last chance to restore the balance in the time period where this evil douche-bag named Belial chooses to slither in. Lilith told us that if we don’t accomplish our mission—in the form of a riddle written by yours truly—then all of what we know will be rewritten the way Belial wants. And that’s the scary part. Evil would triumph over good.

Hold up, Amanda, details please. Who is Lilith?
We met Lilith when we were pulled through the Arch of Atlantis by a radiant, spiraling light. Believe it or not, she exists in Atlantis, or what’s left of it. She’s the Fiftieth Magus of the Arcane Tradition and the guardian of the seventh Arch of Atlantis. I know it’s a mouthful, but that’s what she told us. And who’s gonna argue with a 12,000 year old Magus? Lilith also said that we’re to be part of a greater good—whatever that means—to secure hope for a new tomorrow. Yeah, right. No pressure there.

Ha! I bet that upcoming math test trumps being a Timekeeper!
I wouldn’t say that. Now, if only there was some way to ditch Jordan Jensen in the past…

Thanks so much to Sharon & Amanda for spending some time with us! Listening to them is quite amusing!

The Last Timekeepers and the Arch of AtlantisChildren are the keys to our future. And now, children are the only hope for our past.
When 13-year-old Amanda Sault and her annoying classmates are caught in a food fight at school, they're given a choice: suspension or yard duty. The decision is a no-brainer. Their two-week crash course in landscaping leads to the discovery of a weathered stone arch in the overgrown back yard. The arch isn't a forgotten lawn ornament but an ancient time portal from the lost continent of Atlantis.

Chosen by an Atlantean Magus to be Timekeepers--legendary time travelers sworn to keep history safe from the evil Belial--Amanda and her classmates are sent on an adventure of a lifetime. Can they find the young Robin Hood and his merry band of teens? If they don't, then history itself may be turned upside down.

Sharon Ledwith is the author of the middle-grade/YA time travel series, THE LAST TIMEKEEPERS, available through Musa Publishing. When not writing, researching, or revising, she enjoys reading, yoga, kayaking, time with family and friends, and single malt scotch. Sharon lives in the wilds of Muskoka in Central Ontario, Canada, with her hubby, a water-logged yellow Labrador and moody calico cat.

Euterpe YA Event: Terie Garrison Guest Posts

Welcome back to the page! We are nearing the end of the Euterpe YA Event but it's not over til it's over! Today, we have a blog post from Terie Garrison, author of Changing Gears!

"So how did you go from writing about dragons to writing about bicycle racing?" It's a question I've been asked several times since my new book, CHANGING GEARS, was released. Funny thing is, that's not how it happened; actually, it was the other was around.

CHANGING GEARS is the first novel I ever wrote. Or, well, the first one I ever completed. It started life as a short story with a very different arc. I sent it round to magazines and gathered the usual assortment of rejection letters that most writers accumulate. Then I attended a one-day workshop taught by two YA novelists. One of them, upon hearing the "25-word elevator pitch" informed me, with a glimmer of delight in her eyes, "Well, the reason you can't sell it is that it's a novel."

Hmmm. All right. Writing novels for teens is what I really wanted to do with my life, so I took that comment to heart and turned the tale into a novel. It was a lot of fun. I was into cycling and starting to dabble in racing, so building the bike racing parts of the story was easy. The other parts were more challenging, and it took several rewrites before it arrived in its final form.

While I was submitting CHANGING GEARS in search of a publisher, I wrote another book, and then another. It was the third one I wrote, AUTUMNQUEST, that ended up being my first published novel. And it, of course, was followed by the other three books in the series (WINTERMAEJIC, SPRINGFIRE, and SUMMERDANSE). And then, to my delight, CHANGING GEARS finally found a home at Euterpe.

So, to get back to the original question, but putting it in the correct sequence, "How did I go from writing about bike racing to writing about dragons?"

Well, you remember how I said I was into cycling and racing? There's a common bit of advice often given to new writers: "Write what you know." I knew a lot about cycling, so it was a natural milieu in which to set a story. I didn't have to research as much as if I'd chosen something else, such as, oh, raising chickens, flying airplanes, or living in 18th-century Sweden. I was able to spend more of my creative energy on the rest of the story: characters, plot, conflict, narrative, and so on.

But while "write what you know" is good starting-out advice, it doesn't actually mean that literally. After all, writers of detective novels haven't committed murders (at least, one hopes not), and writers of science fiction novels haven't travelled to other solar systems (at least, not that we know of...yet).

To me, "write what you know" means to write about things that you're comfortable with at a basic level, so that you don't have research every little detail or else worry that you're getting it wrong, and also because when you're writing about a topic with which you're fairly familiar, you'll have enough basic knowledge to know when you need to look things up.

But in the end, you need to move beyond writing what you know. Once you've written a couple of books, it's time to start stretching yourself. You might choose to write about a topic that isn't in your comfort zone, or one that requires you to do more world-building than you've done before. Maybe your third or fourth book will turn out to be about raising chickens, flying airplanes, or even living in 18th-century Sweden. Or, in my case, dragons.

Besides, how much difference, really, is there between a bicycle and a dragon?

Changing Gears Winning the race doesn’t equal winning at life.
After receiving a classic racing bike for his birthday, Barry Sloane discovers that he has the makings of a top-notch bike racer. If things work out right, he could even go to the Olympics some day.
Of course, there are other attractions: the young women racers, and particularly Daphne Turner, who can kick Barry’s rear on a bike any day of the week.
Another discovery, though, puts him at odds with his best friend, and soon Barry has to choose between pursuing his Olympic dream and being the kind of friend he always imagined himself to be.

Euterpe YA Event: Interview with Alyssa Liljequist

Today for the Euterpe YA Event, I have the pleasure of interviewing Alyssa Liljequist, author of YA novel Deadly Delirium!

Mera: Welcome to Mera’s YA Book List Alyssa! Thanks for joining us!

Alyssa: Thank you so much for having me!

Mera:As a young writer, do you feel you relate to your audience more deeply than average for older YA authors?

Alyssa:  I think it is easier for me to relate since I'm still a teen myself. That being said, there are some amazing YA authors out there who it's hard to believe are old enough to be my parents. In excellent YA books, we will get sucked into the story and love the teenaged character(s) and if that happens, it won't matter if the author is 14 or 40.

Mera: Great answer! If you had to choose three, which books would you consider your favorites?

Alyssa: The Bible, the Christian Heritage Series by Nancy N. Rue, and the Life of Faith series by Martha Finley.

Mera: Besides writing, you have lots of hobbies. What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Alyssa: Only one thing :)? The first thing that came to mind was: creating videos. I love video production!

Mera: You’re a freelance writer as well as a new author. Can you tell us some of the other places we might find your writing?

Alyssa: I have been published in several issues of Encounter-The Magazine. Other places my writing has been published in include The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, The Kids' Ark Magazine, and Keys for Kids

Mera: What book, besides your own, would you most recommend to a YA audience?

Alyssa: Funny enough, a lot of my favorite books were ones I read when I was 8-12 so I need to be careful not to recommend a tween book here :). Okay, I have made my decision: The Real Life series by Nancy N. Rue.

Mera: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go?

Alyssa:  I think it'd be really cool to visit Ireland. I would want to explore an old castle.

Mera: You excel in writing historical fiction. Is there a reason this area of writing is enticing to you?

Alyssa: It's like traveling back in time. That's probably cliché. But seriously, I enjoy reading and writing historical fiction because I get to peek into a different time period and imagine how life was lived back then.

Mera: Not cliche at all! You’ve said that you love music. Can you tell us three of your favorite songs at the moment?

Alyssa:  Breathe by Dave and Jess Ray, Glorious Day (Living He Loved Me) by Casting Crowns, and While I'm Waiting by John Waller.

Mera: How about movies? Can you share with us three of your favorites?

Alyssa:  You're asking this of someone who has watched way too many movies...this is hard. I should start with Facing the Giants because it inspired me and helped me believe that I could become a filmmaker even if I never live in Hollywood. I especially like the action/adventure and comedy genres. For action/adventure, I really enjoyed the Bourne trilogy. My current favorite comedy is The Emperor's New Groove :).

Mera: BTW, it would have taken me forever to answer that question! And I'm surprised at the last one. I haven't seen that in quite a while. If you had the chance to go back in history to any era as a spectator, what time period would you pick and why?

Alyssa: This question always stumps me for awhile. My thoughts go something like this: “oh, that's a great time period, I'll pick that one!” and then “no, wait, this one's really good” but “then again, maybe this one...”. So my answer may change from interview to interview :). I'm going to go with WWII. I've been impressed at the unity, courage, and sacrifice that Americans displayed as they fought with the rest of the Allied forces to keep the world free--both on the battlefield and on the home front.

Mera: Very insightful answer, though I couldn't possibly choose WWII. The horrors. Thanks for answering all of my questions, Alyssa!

Alyssa: It was my pleasure.

Mera: *grins* Is there anything you’d like to tell my Listers?

Alyssa:  I would love to hear from you and it'd be great if you could stop by and visit my blog!

You heard the girl! Check out Alyssa and her book!
Links and things below! :)
