In Which I Review... Taste Test by Kelly Fiore

Hardcover, 352 pages
Expected publication: August 27th 2013 by Walker Childrens
Received via NetGalley for review
ISBN13: 9780802728388

SYNOPSIS:

If you can grill it, smoke it, or fry it, Nora Henderson knows all about it. She’s been basting baby back ribs and pulling pork at her father’s barbeque joint since she was tall enough to reach the counter. When she’s accepted to Taste Test, a reality-television teen cooking competition, Nora can’t wait to leave her humble hometown behind, even if it means saying good-bye to her dad and her best friend, Billy. Once she’s on set, run-ins with her high-society roommate and the maddeningly handsome—not to mention talented—son of a famous chef, Christian Van Lorten, mean Nora must work even harder to prove herself. But as mysterious accidents plague the kitchen arena, protecting her heart from one annoyingly charming fellow contestant in particular becomes the least of her concerns. Someone is conducting real-life eliminations, and if Nora doesn’t figure out who, she could be next to get chopped for good.

With romance and intrigue as delectable as the winning recipes included in the story, this debut novel will be devoured by all.

REVIEW:
I absolutely adored this book. I'm sure that had something to do with the fact that I haven't read a cute, fun read in a while (lots of angst-y NA). This was in fact the ultimate cute, fun read. Just the concept of the story, shown via the blurb, was enough to make me want to grab this book up and gobble it down, much like with the recipes outlined during the cooking scenes in the book.
Fiore managed to make the story whole, which could have been difficult for many, considering all of the aspects that go into creating a complete reality show that's inventive, especially since it's only real in words.
I laughed at the areas that remind me of my favorite tv shows, and how in tune the author was with the stereotypes that go into reality television, cooking shows in particular.
What really worked was the fact that it was a spin on reality tv, a mix between the behind the scenes drama you get on reality drama and the formality of cooking shows.
I absolutely loved it all.
Character wise, I really liked the protagonist, Nora. She had a voice, a personality, and she was not afraid to use it. She was flawed and wrong at times, and she made the stupid mistakes we all see in our favorite novels and admonish and it was all spectacular.
While I liked Christian Van Lorton in all of his flawed wonderfulness, if any of you guys are like me, you'd have a small book crush not on him, but on Billy, Nora's best friend who doesn't even get much time. However, everything you know of him you like. I may be a bit biased on his character actually, because a lot of his dialogue reminded me of something one of my friends would say (and yes, I'm crushing on him a bit, sue me, lol). Not embarrassed to say so and he already knows, but back to the point...
His character is relatable and fun. Plus, he does something very valiant towards the end of the book that makes me like him more.
There's this big mystery that goes throughout the entire novel and I must admit, I was just as fooled as Nora and most of the other characters. Christian is one smart cookie, though. One of his many good traits.
My one problem with this novel is more of a personal grudge but I KNOW that the story could have ended on a stronger note. The situation was perfect, I just feel as if a few important lines, the ones that make you feel all jittery and bubbly at the end of a really good YA romance were omitted. It's not enough of a deal to lower any rating because this book really is a great, lightweight read that left me with a small smile and a yawn since I stayed up all night reading Taste Test.

Now to find something else to read that gives me a similar good feeling.
I'd recommend this to anyone who loves YA romance!
5 stars.

Dream Cast for Lumen!

First off, I’m going to say a huge thank you to Mera for hosting me, and as the first to kick the whole thing off. This is going to be awesome!

If you’ve read Lumen before the re-release, when it was self-published you might have your own idea of how the characters look, but here, for the first time, I’ll be sharing who I think best suits the characters of Lumen, as well as a little commentary on why. Also, if you had/have your dream cast of who you think should play Daniel, Jac, Mia, and Reuben in the film… because, Lumen being made into a film is next on the list of things to do. I wish!

Daniel – Protagonist
Adam Gregory

I know that this actor is a lot older now, but in this picture, he looks a lot like how I imagined Daniel… as well as the Daniel that you will see on the cover upon release on the 30th. I always imaged him with a certain degree of innocence on his face, and someone who you just looked at and said “aw” how can the world be so cruel to him… oops, is that a spoiler?

Jac – Confidante
Dean Geyer (long hair)

Jac is the older brother type to Daniel, and so, when I saw him and just this whole look, I realised that this is the guy to play Jac. In recent pictures, Dean has short hair, and he plays Brody from Glee, which I couldn’t see at first, but he looks so much more like Jac with the longer hair, although I don’t think I explicitly said in the book that Jac had longer hair… well, maybe he’s growing it out.

Mia – Romantic Involvement
Emma Roberts

Not only is it Emma Roberts look that gives me Mia, it’s also how I’ve seen her in films, and it clicked, she could play the melodrama that Mia gives, not sure if she could give the British accent, but in a dream world her accent would be perfect.

Reuben – Antagonist
Hugh Laurie

Everything about this man screams Reuben! The intensity of him, but at the same time, there’s also the side that you can’t read, and I think Reuben is very hard to read… his storyline comes clearer towards the end of Lumen, and the start of Noctem.

There are only four, because these are the main characters. For Noctem, there WILL be more characters, and once you’ve read Lumen, you might have an inkling as to who those new characters to the list will be.

Thank you for joining myself and the host of this wonderful blog to celebrate the re-release of Lumen! So, if it’s not already on your Goodreads to-read list, you should go put it on: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13219801-lumen

BLURB:

On an island estranged from the rest of the world are people, people living by the teachings of the Luminary; seven pillars on which their existence rests and all belief was created. These souls have abilities that would make most mortal minds doubt their sanity, and at times it may come as a blessing, but the nature of their belief is based on a curse.

Daniel is going through his final transition, and once complete, he will be able to manipulate the bonds of his energy more freely. Not everything falls so smoothly, and after a near-death experience, Daniel is admitted into the island's only private school, a privilege he is not allowed to forget. While trying to fit in he opens mysteries and troubles beyond the life he came from, and they threaten everything and everyone he once believed in.

Could Daniel come from those legends he was taught about?

In Which I Review... The Truth About You & Me by Amanda Grace

Paperback, 264 pages
Expected publication: September 8th 2013 by Flux
Received for review via NetGalley

SYNOPSIS:
Smart girls aren't supposed to do stupid things.
Madelyn Hawkins is super smart. At sixteen, she's so gifted that she can attend college through a special program at her high school. On her first day, she meets Bennet. He's cute, funny, and kind. He understands Madelyn and what she's endured - and missed out on - in order to excel academically and please her parents. Now, for the first time in her life, she's falling in love.
There's only one problem. Bennet is Madelyn's college professor, and he thinks she's eighteen - because she hasn't told him the truth.
The story of their forbidden romance is told in letters that Madelyn writes to Bennet - both a heart-searing ode to their ill-fated love and an apology.

BLURB:

The Truth About You and Me is an engaging, unique read, written entirely through the form of letters from the female protagonist to her male lead.

Just the concept of this read is enthralling. High school student goes to college through a special program and falls deeply for her professor.

It's made obvious early on that Madelyn's letters are apology notes, and I automatically assumed that the sweet, lovable Bennet is rotting in jail as she pours her heart out on paper.

What does happen is something I didn't expect until right before it happens, and even then I was wishing for a different ending.

The central problem in Madelyn's life isn't that she is struggling in college, or even the fact that she is dating a teacher, it is the fact that she even lied to Bennet about her age in the first place, and it is that which gives the reader every reason to hate Madelyn.

But hating her is almost impossible. Amanda Grace managed to make me feel for Madelyn, whose bad choices caused pain for many, including the person she loves the most.

I spent much of my time reading this story, saying just tell Bennet how old you are Madelyn! Of course, she doesn't and then it's too late.

My feelings towards this book while mixed, is mainly positive. I ended up crying because the end really gets the reader, and lures you into thinking there will be a happy ending.

Definitely a book to read. Don't expect a H.E.A.

In Which I Review... A Really Awesome Mess by Trish Cook and Brendan Halpin

ebook, 288 pages
Expected publication: July 23rd 2013 by EgmontUSA
Received for review via NetGalley

SYNOPSIS:

A hint of Recovery Road, a sample of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and a cut of Juno. A Really Awesome Mess is a laugh-out-loud, gut-wrenching/heart-warming story of two teenagers struggling to find love and themselves.

Two teenagers. Two very bumpy roads taken that lead to Heartland Academy.
Justin was just having fun, but when his dad walked in on him with a girl in a very compromising position, Justin's summer took a quick turn for the worse. His parents' divorce put Justin on rocky mental ground, and after a handful of Tylenol lands him in the hospital, he has really hit rock bottom.

Emmy never felt like part of her family. She was adopted from China. Her parents and sister tower over her and look like they came out of a Ralph Lauren catalog-- and Emmy definitely doesn't. After a scandalous photo of Emmy leads to vicious rumors around school, she threatens the boy who started it all on Facebook.

Justin and Emmy arrive at Heartland Academy, a reform school that will force them to deal with their issues, damaged souls with little patience for authority. But along the way they will find a ragtag group of teens who are just as broken, stubborn, and full of sarcasm as themselves. In the end, they might even call each other friends.
A funny, sad, and remarkable story, A Really Awesome Mess is a journey of friendship and self-discovery that teen readers will surely sign up for.

REVIEW:

Once again authors Trish Cook and Brendan Halpin have come together to create a book I absolutely adore. Like their collaboration on "Notes from the Blender", the duo managed to create fun, refreshing, and unique characters that are attractive to even the readers who feel like they have read it all.
I believe that the main reason the rising powerhouse duo have such likability is the "real factor" in their novels. The characters are real and believable, and overwhelming relatable.
Much like Declan in "Notes", Justin too has a strong like for pornography, as do many of the other boys in the book, and that of course is off-putting to the female protagonist, Emmy. Both characters are wonderful to read about, proving that Cook and Halpin's writing works together like peanut butter and jelly.

The characters are set in a unique surrounding and each has to face their own demons. Another reason to like this book is the fact that the love story comes second to the characters' internal battles. It's not the mushy stuff that comes from romance novels, and while I like that, it's refreshing to see a relationship closer to real ones: awkward, confusing, and uncertain.
This book is definitely a must read, and what I've said in my previous review of the two's writing  collab stands true. "I think of it as a powerhouse duo similar to David Levithan and Rachel Cohn."
I expect even more brilliance from the two in the future and hope they continue to write together and create these brilliant, unique, funny, and delightful characters that seem to inhabit their mind space.
