Who Could That Be at this Hour?

Who Could That Be at this Hour? vol. 1 of All the Wrong Questions by Lemony Snicket (NY: Little, Brown, 2012).

Thirteen-year-old Lemony Snicket heads off with his odd new chaperone, S. Theodora Markson, to the small town of Stain'd-by-the-Sea to begin his apprenticeship in the mysterious VFD. They are tasked with restoring a stolen statue of the Bombinating Beast to its rightful owner, but the owner's identity quickly becomes unclear, as does the identity of who has hired them and a myriad of other circumstances.

Inquisitive readers will love this new series by Lemony Snicket which begs many questions and defines many words with the same dark and deadpan humor that made A Series of Unfortunate Events so popular. The villain of the series, Hangfire, appears only as a talented mimic who impersonates the voices of other characters to lead Lemony astray as he pursues clues.  It's a roundabout but entertaining tale of clever kids and daft adults that middle-grade readers will enjoy.  Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Last Month's Enticing YA Releases

Here's an awesome list of YA books that came out in January that are on my to read list! It's a little late but there's no way you've gotten them all! The titles lead to there links on Amazon so you can find out more about them!

Check it out! Are there any that you've missed or bypassed!

Splintered by A.G Howard
Falling For You by Lisa Schroeder
Reaper by L.S. Murphy

WHY I WANT TO READ IT:
Splintered: It's a remake of Alice in Wonderland. What more must I say? :)

Falling For You: A thrilling YA romance about an overprotective bf!

Reaper: I am super excited to see L.S. Murphy's take on the Grim Reaper.

WHY I WANT TO READ IT:
Revolution 19: The cover just draws me in and the description is like 'Wow'! I'm excited to read this take on robots. It hasn't been done often in the past few years.

Then You Were Gone: It's been compared to books like 13 Reasons Why. I have a feeling I'd probably cry while reading this, and I have no problems with crying.

Shadow Lands: It seems as if it's going to be a paranormal story by looking at the stunning cover, but in fact it's not. The blurb reveals that it's, in fact, a disturbing thriller and one I so want to read. The cover also makes me think I have a reason for my illogical fear of birds.

Deeper We Fall by Chelsea M. Cameron
Shrapnel by Stephanie Lawton
Uses for Boys by Erica Lorraine Scheidt

WHY I WANT TO READ IT:

Deeper We Fall: I am a sucker for contemporary romance and I want this one!

Shrapnel: Set in a believable reality, but filled with psychic abilities, and a reality show featuring teens with these paranormal abilities! I want to read this.

Uses for Boys: Ugh. I can't even explain. All I can say is that I want it. Read the blurb. You'll probably want it too!

Okay then! It'd take forever to tell you why I want all of the book going on this list, so I'll stop there with my opinions on the books! The rest of the books will just be the covers and the links of course, but rest assured, I so want them, even if I have no place to put them!

The Runaway's Secret by Leah D.W. Cover Reveal

Hey guys! If you check the FB page yesterday you would have seen the awesome cover reveal of Leah D.W., aka our super awesome admin.

It's possible that I'm a little too excited but I'm so happy for her it makes no sense.

However, if you haven't seen her gorgeous cover yet, here it is for all of your spectating glory!

Let us know how you like it!

BLURB:

Running from the past…
Running from myself….
To protect those you love, some secrets should never come to light.
My life changed the night I became the same monster...
I had been forced to serve all my human years. As a fanged freak, I took to running away from my troubles rather than facing them head-on.
I should have kept running...
My world turned upside down once more when I met Solomon. He promised that I would be safe locked up in a fancy academy filled with supernatural creatures just like me. He promised that I had nothing to fear.
If only that had been true.
How long before the nightmares catch up to me? I’d hated myself for the monster that I’d become and the life I had been forced to leave behind. Sometimes I wished that she would find and kill me, ending this nightmarish existence, but that would mean leaving everyone I had come to know and love as well. Could I possibly do that?
...time is running out, I must make a choice.
...until then, I must keep running.
...must become the monster even I have come to fear.

In Which I Review... The Genius of Little Things by Larry Buhl

The Genius of Little ThingsSixteen-year-old Tyler’s big dream of becoming a top immunologist could come crashing down if he doesn’t manage all of the little things right now. But when this obsessive-compulsive science geek confronts a school election, a demeaning job, needy tutees, a first girlfriend, and the possible extinction of honeybees, there are suddenly too many things to manage.

Tyler’s catastrophically humorous run for high school student council convinces the principal that he’s a troublemaker, while it wins him the admiration and desire of Rachel, a smart and iconoclastic reporter for the school paper.
A new night job at a nursing home puts Tyler on a collision course with his new foster parents, a childless middle-aged couple with an agenda and a tragic past of their own. And the pain of his mother’s death becomes too big to ignore.

Set on the mean streets of suburban Las Vegas, The Genius of Little Things is about how you can’t always get what you want. But sometimes, well, you know...

Kindle Edition, first, 235 pages
Published January 15th 2013

Larry Buhl's The Genius of Little Things is exactly the type of book I love, especially when the narrator is a boy. The slightly satirical novel, which spared no amount of dry wit, follows the life of a teenaged boy named Tyler. Tyler is what I would call a social nightmare. He's sweet hearted, but he is also no good with people. He is full of humor and witty retort, and kept me laughing throughout the novel.

Besides his wit and his hard time socializing, the good thing about Tyler is that he is relatable. Whether or not the reader is a foster or adopted child, a student stressing over college applications, and acceptances, or a teen searching for love, Tyler's story is one that all teen readers can identify with.

I love it when I come across books such as this one. It's rare finding a book that reminds me of those quirky types of books that became popular by early low-brow and indie authors.

This book will forever go into a vault in my brain with books like How to Say Goodbye in Robot, almost every David Levithan and Rachel Cohn book, and more recently Dayla Moon's novels, Practice Cake and Smart Mouth Waitress.

Trust me, that's a high compliment. I rate The Genius of Little Things a 4.5 out of 5 stars. What is most surprising is that Buhl managed to pack a great, heartfelt, and sardonic story into 235 pages.

Definitely to be read.
